The Youth Pennant team were up against Maungakiekie at Aviation on Sunday morning. Fortunately with a tee time of 11am the worst of the weather had passed by the time we started. Although the underfoot conditions were very wet, at least we had no rain during the contest.
Andrew Meng started positively with a birdie and this was the beginning of a great day for him. Wins on the first 8 holes were stalled with a half on the 9th, but the match was over on the 10th green with an 9/8 victory. Andrew was only +2 when the match finished.
Manaaki McColl also won the first but then made hard work of his match, by the 9th he was 3down. He never seemed comfortable with his game and was always playing catchup golf, finally losing 4/2.
Chris de Bruyn and Rakesh Patel filled in the middle slots of the team and both played solidly to establish a +3 and +2 lead respectively at the halfway point. Both players extended their lead into the back nine, with Rakesh finishing first on 16th green (4/2), and Chris one hole later for a 2/1 win.
Tom Ritchie and James Eng were our top order, with Tom dominating his opponent (a late replacement). After 11 holes this match was over 8/7 and Tom was square with the card. James' match was much tougher against Matty Tiplady. It was always close with James 1down at the turn and fighting back from -3 in the middle of the back nine. James finally lost 2/1 but overall a 4-2 for the boys that consolidates our lead at the top of the section.
