Course Update 11 April 2018

Storm damage and coring.

As you know, Auckland was hit by an extremely powerful storm in the early hours of last evening. There has been severe and widespread damage around the city and unfortunately the golf course took quite a beating too.

Storm Damage

We recorded 26mm rain but the damage was caused by the extreme winds of up to 140km/h! So far there seems to be no significant damage to any buildings but we have suffered significant damage to trees on the golf course. Approximately 20 trees have fallen and countless branches and large tree limbs have come down or are ‘hanging’. Fortunately, and unfortunately this has happened while the course is closed for coring. It will take some time to clear up the mess and restore the course to a tidy state. There are many unsafe trees and hanging branches and we need to make sure we make the course as safe as possible again before reopening on Monday.

Coring

Coring got off to a good start on Monday with all the greens being cored and sanded. Unfortunately, the weather deteriorated on Tuesday (worse than was expected) and we have not yet been able to mat the sand into the core holes as the sand is too wet. As soon as it does dry out enough we will make every endeavour to complete the renovations to the greens. We have also cored and cleared all the Tees and started sanding them. We have had to delay the sanding of the tees for a day or so until the weather improves. We are also still planning to core all the green surrounds on Thursday and Friday.

All the fairways on the back 9 holes have been cored and are in various stages of clearing the cores. The only fairways that still need to be cored on the front 9 holes will be a small part of 1, a small part of 4, 5, 6 and 9. There will be ‘Lift, Clean and Place’ in effect when the course reopen and we will do everything possible to return the course to the best possible playing condition for Monday.
