The Meadowbank Barfoot & Thompson Challenge Cup is taking a breather over the school holidays but many of our juniors are playing tournaments and representing Auckland around the top half of the North Island.

A 8-player development team went to New Plymouth last week to play in the North Taranaki Age Groups and a match play event against Taranaki.  4 of our players were selected - Nathan Smith, Robby Turnbull, Daniel Freeman and Hugh Lee.

The Age Group stroke play event was 36 holes at Fitzroy Golf Club on Wednesday in good conditions (weather and under-foot).  Robby Turnbull was the stand-out performer shooting 71 & 69 (140) to win the Under 19 title by 4 shots - outstanding for an 11-yr old!  Daniel Freeman was 2nd (73 & 71) overall and won the U15 title.  Fitzroy is a links course like Muriwai but with smaller greens.  Nathan shot 79 & 75, while Hugh finished 78 & 85.

The matches against Taranaki were played at Ngamotu the next day.  The morning round reverse singles were dominated by Auckland to lead 7-1 at lunchtime.  Hugh won 7/6, Daniel won 4/3, Robby won 4/3 and Nathan won 2up.  In the afternoon singles Hugh, Robby and Nathan won again, while Daniel lost 3/1.  The overall result was a convincing 12-4 win for Auckland.
