Each year four clubs compete against each other in
this 18 Hole Matchplay event. This year Manukau was the host club and North
Shore, Remuera and The Grange were all present and correct to tee off at
9.00am.
Remuera was pitted against The Grange so North Shore struck
Manukau on their home soil. The course was in quite good shape so the girls had
to play the lie today. The greens were very fast and there was a lot of run on
the fairways if you stayed on them.
For Remuera Pru Robertson, Mary Pope, Daphne McKenzie,
Merrilyn Kavvas, Margaret Hancox and Bronwyn Holdsworth were on the tee. Pru
led the way and despite giving 5 shots was never in trouble. Mary played a long
term friend and was given 2 shots – she like Pru was really never in doubt. The
other matches seesawed somewhat – all the Remuera girls being given a few shots
by their slightly lower handicap opponents. Daphne had a chance on the last
hole to steal a win but that greenside bunker got in the way so the match ended
with Daphne only half a point off the pace. Merrilyn rallied after being down
by 2 points at the turn to halve her match and Margaret halved as well. Bronwyn
won by the slightest of margins to bring home the necessary half point we
needed. Remuera won the day!
It was a very interesting day and a lot of fun and good
sportsmanship – a few mishaps such as teeing off the men’s tee, hitting the
wrong ball and playing out of turn all added to the excitement. A great day all
round.
Remuera
59.5
North Shore 59
Manukau
49.5
The Grange 49
As we say in 18 Hole Matchplay – every half is valuable and
so it proved today!
Next year Remuera will be the host club so we will endeavour
to win the day twice in a row having come off the runner’s up spot last year.
