After 54 holes of golf over the weekend the Championship was decided on the 2nd extra hole in a play-off between Scott Robertson and Matthew Cormack.

After the 1st round on Saturday Matthew Cormack and Rakesh Patel (73s) held a 5 shot lead over Scott Robertson (78).  Scoring was tough in very windy conditions in the first round.  Sunday morning and thankfully the wind had dropped and Matty (147) stretched out to a 3 shot lead over Rakesh (150).  Scotty was back on 154 and 7 shots behind Matty at this stage.  Best score in the 2nd round went to James Eng (72) which brought him into contention on 151.

The final round in the afternoon saw Rakesh and Scott edging closer to the lead over the first 9 holes.  The big change came on the 16th when Matty lost a ball and finally finished with a 9, while Scott's birdie and Rakesh's par suddenly meant that they were just 1 behind Matt.  Scott's 3 on the 17th drew him level with Matt and going down the 18th Rakesh was just one behind.

Rakesh put his second to the front of the 18th green - the pin was tucked in the back.  Scott was under the trees behind the left bunkers, while Matt chipped on from about 90m out.  Scott's incredible chip shot left him a very short putt for birdie, while Rakesh unfortunately 3-putted to finish with a 5.  Matty holed a very good breaking putt from about 8m for his birdie and Scott tapped in for his.  This confirmed the play-off between Matt and Scott.

Neither of their drives on the first found the fairway but Matt put his second just short of the green leaving a short chip to the front pin position.  Scott played an incredible shot with his hybrid from about 220m and on the side of the hill right of the fairway bunker to about 3m from the pin.  Unfortunately his eagle putt was fractionally short and this left Matt with a 1m putt to halve in birdies, which he holed confidently.

On the second Matt was slightly right under trees but he put his approach on the green and about 25m from the flag.  Scott was centre of the fairway and put his 7iron to about 18m.  Matt left his birdie putt just under the hole and completed his par, leaving Scott with a birdie putt to win, which he confidently holed for the Championship.

Congratulations, Scotty.  The golf you and Matty played over the last 3 holes was quite incredible.  Hopefully we will see a similar standard when we host the NZ Amateur here in late October.
