NZ Amateur Championships Review

Topic: General
It was an incredible week of golf at the NZ Amateur.  The course was in fantastic condition drawing praise from players all week.  While we were lucky that there was no rain during the event (to speak of), it remained windy every day but always from the south-west.

In the Men's event James Eng posted the lowest score from our players - 150 (+6) to be tied on 29th.  Unfortunately he lost in a playoff for the final spot in the 32 qualifiers as 6 players competed for the last 4 spots.  The other scores from our men were:
Matthew Cormack (151), Rakesh Patel (153), Robby Turnbull (154), Daniel Freeman (154), Thai Leng (155), Tomas Shaw (156), Tony Jung (157), Steven Oh (159), Nathan Smith (159), Michael Smith (166) and Rosco Valentine (167).

In the Women's event the best Remuera performer was Grace Jung (158) T19th, followed by Rianne Li (160), Rebekah Blackwell-Chin (161), Mary Chen (163), Aileen Du (171), Chloe Lam (173) and Kelly Wu (175).  Grace, Rianne and Rebekah all made the top 32 qualifiers for the match play rounds.  Unfortunately none progressed to the Round of 16 - Grace lost on 19th hole, while Rebekah lost 3/1 and Rianne lost 4/3.

The standard of golf was unbelievable at times - there were 3 holes in one, including one in the morning round of the final!  The Men's final was won by Sam Jones (Taranaki) over Mitchell Kale (Bay of Plenty) by 4/3 after Mitchell was 1up at the end of the morning round.  In the Women's final Caryn Khoo (Auckland) was 1up at the lunch break over Doey Choi (Australia) and 2 birdies on the 36th hole meant a sudden death playoff.  Doey finally won at the 38th hole.

Thanks to all those members who helped with billets and volunteering.  And a special thanks to the team of green keepers who worked so hard presenting the course over the week.
